Biological Solutions for a Healthier Tomorrow
OngoingExploring local Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) isolates for mosquito control
Chemical insecticides remain widely used for mosquito control, but insecticide resistance, environmental persistence, and effects on non-target organisms limit their effectiveness. This research explores Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a naturally occurring, spore-forming bacterium that produces crystalline proteins active against mosquito larvae, as a locally derived and environmentally compatible alternative for controlling mosquitoes that transmit malaria, dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis.
Research Approach
- Soil Sampling — collecting soil samples from habitats suitable for recovering spore-forming Bacillus species
- Isolation — isolating presumptive Bt using conventional bacteriological techniques
- Characterization — morphological and biochemical characterization to distinguish Bt from the closely related Bacillus cereus group
- Molecular Analysis — PCR detection of cry and cyt toxin genes and genetic profiling of promising isolates
- Evaluating Mosquitocidal Activity — testing isolates against mosquito larvae to assess larvicidal potential
- Towards Real-World Impact — advancing promising indigenous Bt candidates toward formulation and field evaluation as biological larvicides
